Is there anything more quintessentially summer than fresh off-the-vine strawberries?  We love gathering up friends and family to strawberry pick at local farms, you?  If any fruit is actually left and not gobbled up on the spot, it’s fun to bake a pie or fix a strawberry margarita together.  Of all the favored strawberry desserts however, this homemade cake has got to be one of the best we’ve seen and tasted.  Sally of Sally’s Baking Addiction has shared it with us and we are embarrassingly obsessed.  We recently interviewed her on our podcast (you can listen here) where she gave details about the development of this recipe and how she got started as a food blogger.  She’s written and photographed 3 best-selling cookbooks and worked hard to build Sally’s Baking Addiction into a well-known trusted resource for fellow dessert lovers.  Her recipes are incredible and her story inspiring.

This strawberry cake is like none other we’ve tried.  Its obvious Sally has spent time and effort testing it into perfection.  Our favorite part is how the freshness of the strawberries shines through without changing the texture of the cake or adding any fake flavoring.  One of her tricks is to reduce fresh strawberries into a thick puree which is added to the batter for the fluffiest most richly flavored cake you’ve ever had.  The final product is a gorgeous pastel pink cake topped with a strawberry cream cheese frosting.  Every bite is bursting with flavor and there’s no doubt this recipe will make you the star of your next meal!  For all the recipe details, head over to Sally’s website Sally’s Baking Addiction and get baking.

Homemade Strawberry Cake


  1. 2.5 Cups sifted cake flour
  2. 2 tsp baking powder
  3. 1/2 tsp baking soda
  4. 1 tsp salt
  5. 3/4 Cup unsalted butter (room temperature)
  6. 1 + 3/4 Cups sugar
  7. 5 large egg whites (room temperature)
  8. 1/2 Cup whole milk, (room temperature)
  9. 1/2 Cup strawberry puree
  10. 1/3 Cup sour cream or plain yogurt, (room temperature)
  11. 2 tsp pure vanilla extract
  12. optional: 1-2 drops red or pink food coloring
    Strawberry Cream Cheese Frosting
  1. 8-oz block full-fat cream cheese, (room temperature)
  2. 1 Cup freeze-dried strawberries
  3. 3 Cups powdered sugar
  4. 1/2 Cup unsalted butter, (room temperature)
  5. 1–2 Tbls milk
  6. 1 tsp pure vanilla extract
  7. salt, to taste
