3 southern breakfast cheddar biscuits on a white plate with cup of tea

Is there anything more scrumptious than a warm and flaky biscuit right out the oven?  Smother that thing with gravy, butter, or jam and you’re in business.  The south is known for their biscuits so we’re turning to Jenn Davis, a true southerner, for her southern buttermilk recipe.  Jenn is the girl-boss behind the food and baking blog Two Cups Flour.  We recently had the privilege of speaking with her on our podcast (listen here) and enjoyed hearing the story of how she turned her creative passions into her profession and took the leap to follow her heart.  She describes her great love of baking and how her photography skills gave her a leg up once she took the plunge.  Listen in and give these biscuits a try, you won’t regret it.

There are many of us who feel intimidated to make our own biscuits but with this recipe in your back pocket, you’re golden.  Plus, if for whatever reason you mess up, you’re just 30 minutes and about $2.00 away from a second attempt.  These biscuits call for buttermilk and Jenn makes it clear this is something not to be messed with (it’s the southern way).  Did you know you can quickly make your own buttermilk simply by adding 1 tablespoon of lemon juice or vinegar to 1 cup of milk?

This particular recipe calls for cheddar cheese and rosemary but biscuits are so versatile you could substitute for any flavor your heart desires.  Try bacon and cheddar or blueberries and sour cream, the options are endless.  So head into your kitchens, put on some Avett Brothers and get baking y’all!

Southern Sunday Breakfast Biscuits

  1. 2 Cups flour (all-purpose)
  2. 1 Tbsp sugar
  3. 1 Tbsp baking powder
  4. 1 tsp salt (kosher)
  5. 1/2 Cup 8 Tbsp unsalted butter (cut into small cubes)
  6. 1 Cup 12 oz buttermilk (no substitutions)
  7. 1/2 Cup cheddar cheese (shredded)
  8. 2 tsp rosemary (dried)

  • Preheat oven to 450F and line baking sheet with parchment paper
  • Whisk together dry ingredients in a medium bowl
  • Add butter and mix together by hand
  • Use your fingers to squeeze butter into the flour (mixture will thicken as butter is incorporated)
  • Mix until it feels like cornmeal with tiny chunks of butter
  • Stir in your cheddar cheese
  • Pour in the buttermilk and stir with wooden spoon until a dough is formed (should be slightly moist and sticky, but still hold its shape)
  • Use a large soup spoon to scoop dough and place on the baking sheet (makes 6 large biscuits)
  • You can shape them slightly but they aren't supposed to look perfect
  • Bake until edges are golden brown (10-12 mins)
  • Serve warm right out of the oven and enjoy!
